How to Build the Right Support Team for Self-Direction
A Strong Team Makes All the Difference
One of the biggest benefits of Self-Direction is having the freedom to choose who supports you or your loved one — but building the right team takes some planning. Your support staff are more than just employees; they’re part of your day-to-day life, and a good fit can lead to more independence, consistency, and peace of mind.
Here are a few key steps to help you build a strong, reliable support team:
1. Define Your Needs
Before hiring, ask:
• What kind of support is needed? (e.g., personal care, transportation, community activities)
• What hours or days are required?
• Are there specific skills or personality traits that would work best?
Having a clear picture helps you find people who are truly the right fit.
2. Use Your Network
Some of the best staff come through people you already know. Share what you’re looking for with family, friends, school contacts, or local community groups. Word of mouth is powerful!
You can also post jobs on platforms like:
• Indeed
• Care.com
• Facebook Groups (community-specific or disability-support groups)
3. Ask the Right Interview Questions
It’s okay to treat interviews like a conversation — but don’t be afraid to ask direct questions, such as:
• Why are you interested in this role?
• Have you worked with people with disabilities before?
• How do you handle stressful or unexpected situations?
• Are you comfortable with [specific tasks or medical needs]?
Trust your instincts during the conversation — your gut can tell you a lot.
4. Set Clear Expectations from Day One
Once hired, provide a written schedule, job duties, and any important routines or preferences. The more your staff knows upfront, the smoother things will run.
And don’t forget to check in regularly. A five-minute weekly touch base can make a big difference.
5. Talk to Your Broker and FI
Your Support Broker (that’s me!) can help you write job descriptions, find candidates, and guide you through the hiring process. Your Fiscal Intermediary (FI) will handle background checks, paperwork, and payroll — but we work as a team to support you.

Building your team takes effort, but the payoff is huge. The right staff help you move toward more independence, better routines, and a more empowered life.
